Census of India 2011

Census 2011 of India is 15th Census (after Independence 7th ).

In India the first census was held on 1872 during Lord Mayo period.

In India the first regular census was held on 1881 during Lord Rippon's period.

Slogan of Census 2011 is Our Census Our Future.

Total population is 121cr. according 2011 census.

Rural population- 68.9%
Urban population- 31.1%

Census commissioner of India is C. Chandramouli.

Worlds population is 7 Billion (India's Population in percentage 17.5%).

 Population density in India is 382 persons per 1 square kilometer. In 2001 census it was 325/sq.KM. National Capital Territory of Delhi has the highest pop.

Decade growth rate- 17.7%

Maximum population is in Uttar pradesh.

Minimum population is in Sikkim.

High population density state is Bihar(1106).

Lowest population density state is Arunachal pradesh.

State with highest fertility rate is Meghalaya.

Literacy
According to the definition in the census, any person aged seven and above who can read and write with understanding in any language is literate. 

The pace of progress in literacy rates as revealed by decennial census is very slow in India. In the span of fifty years i.e from 1951 (18.33) to 2001(64.83), there has been only marginal increase of 46.5 percent in literacy rate. Between 1951 to 2001, female literacy shows a mere 44.7 percent increase which is only five times for the whole point.

Literacy rate of India- 74.04%

State with maximum Literacy -  Kerala.(93.91%)

State with minimum Literacy - Bihar.(63.82%.)

Most literate Union territory - Lakshadweep (92.3%)

Least literate Union territory - Dadra nagar & haweli.(77.7%)

The 2011 census, indicated a 2001–2011 decadal literacy growth of 9.2%.

Compared to 2001,in 2011 male literacy rate increased by 6 percentage points but female literacy increased by nearly 12 percentage points, which is viewed as a remarkable achievement.
